Prehistoric mythology references the Mont as a place of combat between two giants that fought over the destiny of the world.

Centuries later it was believed that the Mont was host to the battle between the Archangel and the Devil, leading to the birth of the cult of St. Michael.

Benedictine monks, who built and inhabited its monastaries, declared the Mont the "City of God", destined for those chosen to survive the end of the world, on Judgement Day.
