The Mont's Cloister was one of the very first buildings to be outfitted with "ogival" arches. This marked a sophisticated departure from traditional Romanesque design, which many believe inspired the Gothic architectural movement of the 12th century.
After a fire destroyed part of the abbey in the early 13th century, a true Gothic monastery was added. Its elegant design was deeply entrenched in religious symbolism, continuing the quest to build the "City of God".
